This part of my ‘Tree’ is that of my maternal grandfather’s side. His part of the family emigrated from Lancashire and settled in the South Island of New Zealand in April, 1877. My grandfather was born there in Greymouth and possibly also his brother whose birth registration has remained a mystery. The family only remained there till about 1880/1 and then came over to settle in Sydney, Australia. From there on I have been able to follow most of the family down to the present day.
I don’t know much about this line back beyond my 3rd great grandfather John LOWTON who was a weaver and the first I find on him is his marriage to Elizabeth HOUGHTON in Wigan, Lancashire. The name was apparently LOWTON then but over the years, the spelling more commonly became LAWTON.
John Lawton, my 2nd great grandfather born in 1821 is shown in the 1851 census as a brakeman on the railway, at Wigan, where the family remained for another generation or so. The 1881 census shows quite a few Lawton and Lowton entries being born in that area, possibly descendants of John Snr.
My great grandfather, you guessed it, another John, married Ellen CRITCHLEY, the daughter of James Critchley and Jane ASPINALL from Whiston, Lancashire and granddaughter of Thomas & Ellen Crithchley. Her father died when Jane was only 3 and her mother married a Joseph HAYES (or Heyes) some 10 years later. I have done a little research on her siblings and their descendants.
These families need a lot more research time put into them and I would dearly love to hear from anyone who even THINKS they might be related to any names mentioned below, so please don't be too shy to contact me by Email.
